Why women's TDEE is lower
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation treats sex as a fixed constant: +5 for men and −161 for women. Everything else being equal, that is a 166 kcal gap in daily BMR — roughly a slice of toast. The difference is not arbitrary. Women carry a higher essential fat percentage and less skeletal muscle than men of the same weight, and muscle is the tissue that consumes most energy around the clock.
| Same person | BMR | TDEE (lightly active) |
|---|---|---|
| Woman, 32, 5'4", 150 lb | 1,375 | 1,891 |
| Man, same stats | 1,541 | 2,119 |
| Difference | 166 kcal | 228 kcal |
If you enter your body fat percentage, the calculator switches to Katch-McArdle, which works from lean mass and skips this constant altogether — often a better fit for women who strength train.
